In partnership with USAS, Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies hosted a screening of the powerful and gut-wrenching documentary, Freedom on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom. The film comes from Evgeny Afineevsky, the director of the acclaimed Netflix documentary, Winter on Fire, which follows Ukraine’s 2014 Revolution of Dignity. In his most recent film, Afineevsky follows the lives of Ukrainian families and children whose lives have been ravaged by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, as well as the soldiers who bravely risk their lives to fight for their families, freedom, and democracy throughout the entire world. The documentary succinctly and effectively contextualizes Ukraine’s long struggle for independence from Russian imperialism, while overwhelmingly directing its focus on the lives of regular people who show incredible courage and perseverance in the face of unfathomable cruelty. While Russia destroys entire families, buildings and cities, Ukrainians respond with strength, bravery, and a certainty that justice will prevail.
